Peace. Maybe the most elusive experience on earth. A way of living that takes into account all life which surrounds us and how it is affected by our presence. It's our greatest daydream. A balance which is struck when our footprints come to enrich the paths we navigate. Finding our place in the world and coming to experience the contented joy which flows from living a life that is rich in texture and ultimately sustainable.

Nukuyweni. Fijian for "footprints in the sand," the peninsula of old growth jungle known as Nukuyweni lies on two bays within the leeward lagoon of the mountainous rainforest island of Gau ("ng-OW"). Hidden amongst ancient trees, alive with the extremely rare emerald iguana and the beautiful Gau parrot, are scant signs of human habitation. Stone and wood structures, pools of fresh water, brightly flowered walkways, terraced gardens. Nukuyweni may best be described as a lost colony. Vibrant with the expressions of man's greatest contribution to life on earth. Art and music. Powered by the sun. Only the sun. A way of life. A sustainable way of life.

Eden. Four handmade cottages with outrigger canoes lie on a one-third mile long golden beach, along the smooth waters of the Bay of Angels. Each cottage gives way to a volcanic stone bathing grotto, with private plunge pool. From the sanctuary of each cottage, a couple may experience an edenlike sensual clarity. No sign of other cottages or anything else man-made, for that matter, can be seen from any aspect of each of the four cottages. "Civilization" is a five minute walk to a mango shaded patio on the hillside high above. An old fashioned kitchen with stone bread oven and herb garden, plus three acres of organic orchards and vegetable gardens provides the poolside dining terrace with a "Like Water for Chocolate" form of culinary expression.

Allure. Although you may arrive to find yourself overwhelmed (for the first time in a long time) by a driving ambition to do NOTHING, you may soon find the colors of the sea to be a bit too alluring. The calm waters beyond the beach are alive with manta rays, blue trevally, and turtles while thousands of colorful smaller fish drift amongst the coral. Ningali Passage, a fifteen minute boat ride away, is one of the most spectacular scuba diving sites in the whole of the South Pacific. Waterfalls and emerald pools cool the unexplored jungle of the island's interior. The six deserted beaches which share the calm lagoon on either side of the Bay of Angels provide wonderful places to experience the sensation of complete privacy on a remote beach. OR . . . . you can just hang out in the horizon pool high up on the patio or in the treehouse pub and think about all the energetic stuff you might do when you don't sleep in all day.

Warmth. Beyond all these things, though, the most precious asset our sleepy island has to offer is the overwhelming warmth of the Fijian people and the rich culture which still thrives in the handful of remote and peaceful villages of Gau. A very proud people still engaged in a lifestyle of fishing, gardening, and celebrating, the Fijians have become known around the world for the intoxicating kindness that they effortlessly share with new friends and the impassioned hard work and uncontrollable joy which defines the way they live each day. They consider it a privilege to have you join them in any of their passions, whether it be a fish drive, a meke dance, a church service, or the weekly recording session around the kava bowl with The Lost City Band.

Spark. Nukuyweni is dedicated to the belief that your daydreams are your most valuable asset. It is the spark which keeps us all going even when our senses are being temporarily slighted. For you to follow that spark to the sands of our bay is to entrust us with something which is immensely precious and we believe that you deserve no less than the experience of a lifetime. To be sure, there are some people who might decidedly NOT enjoy Nukuyweni Outpost. There isn't much in the way of a familiar stream of background noise or distractions at Nukuyweni — except when the parrots are occasionally fighting over the same nut — and the ever unsettled may struggle somewhat to keep their ball rolling, in spite of the scuba diving, outrigger canoeing, hiking, snorkeling, beach ping pong, deep-sea fishing, massage, badminton, expansive music collection, weekly baitfish drive in the bay with the vivacious grannies from Somosomo village, twenty board games, great wines and spring water, paints and easels, deserted beach picnics, one thousand books, coconut bowling, croquet, daily rock and roll (Lage' Nom-Ai Nom-Ai) happy hour at the Salvaged Outlook Saloon, swimming with manta rays, resting, snuggling, dozing, etc. For those who've ever, past or present, experienced life in varying stages of curiosity or amazement, we believe that our little oasis in the South Seas will provide you an experience of warmth, peace, and privacy that you have never before encountered. Moments to think. To dream. To love. To laugh. An opportunity to find out who you are, were, or will be. A sanctuary for the romantic soul. As with most things of any real value, the rest is up to you.
