Mill Valley Coldwell Banker Agent Joan Mantecon Among Habitat for Humanity Volunteers in Thailand

Mantecon part of humanitarian mission organized by National Association of Realtors

MILL VALLEY, Calif. September 9, 2005 Joan Mantecon, a Mill Valley agent for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, showed that real estate starts from the ground up when she spent two weeks building a house in Khao Lak, southern Thailand for a tsunami-affected family.

Mantecon, a lifelong supporter of Habitat for Humanity, was among a dozen humanitarian volunteers taking part in the recent trip organized by the National Association of Realtors. Battling daily rains and working often in stormy weather, the group completed up to the houses roof level for homeowner Urai Yotharak.

It has been a bittersweet experience, but extremely rewarding, said Mantecon, who returned recently from Thailand. There has been so much destruction from the tsunami and so many people devastated. The woman who we were helping lost so much, including her husband, and now is raising her children on her own without a job. It gave us a good feeling that we were able to help in some way.

For homeowner Yotharak, it was a special occasion to work alongside the volunteers who came to rebuild her life after the December tsunami turned her life into a nightmare. Her husband was killed as the waves crashed into the beach resort construction site where he was working. Yotharak, a cook in the resort, was left her without a job as well as a husband. She had no means to support herself and her children, 20-year-old Yad and Boon Long, aged three.

Besides Mantecon, the NAR group was comprised of volunteers from Alaska, Cape Cod, Florida, Hawaii, Virginia and New York.  The volunteers were the first and only Realtor team to build at the tsunami site.  Mantecon said they hoped that the trip will inspire other Realtors to lead teams in the future.

In fact, two of our team members from Mantecons group are already on their way to the Gulf Coast to work with the Red Cross in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mantecon said she is waiting to hear if she and the rest of the group can join them. We as a team have already put in a request to go to the Gulf Coast with Habitat as soon as they are ready for us, she said.

In Thailand, the team began their project the last week of July, leveling the land, laying foundations, installing a septic tank, laying bricks and painting roof tiles. By the end of the two weeks, the team had almost completed Urais new home.

We basically built a house by scratch by hand with no power tools, Mantecon recalled. We didnt speak the same language and had to use a lot of sign language to communicate. We were not sure how it would all work out, but by the end of the project everything came together and we became very close as a group. It was a very rewarding experience.

The teams experience was chronicled by a film crew being sent by the National Association of Realtors, which donated $1.5 million to Habitat for Humanity Internationals tsunami rebuild efforts.

Having visited many third world countries herself, Mantecon knows first-hand the kind of devastation and despair their citizens face.  While she had thought about doing a humanitarian trip for some time, she decided that the Habitat for Humanity build opportunity in Thailand was the perfect opportunity.

As a Realtor, its so natural to be involved with Habitat for Humanity, Mantecon said.  To be building among the tsunami survivors and my peers from around the country was an unforgettable experience.

Now that Mantecon has returned from her Thailand trip, she is busy focusing on a local Habitat for Humanity project the Mill Valley Coldwell Bankers upcoming Habitat fundraising dinner and silent auction, slated for September 23.  She and 18 volunteers from her office are putting this event together.  All proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

For more information on the upcoming dinner, you can contact Joan Mantecon at 415-380-3995 or e-mail her at joan.mantecon@camoves.com.
